About Suzanne

 SUZANNE-SHERMAN-Book Consultant

I’m dedicated to helping writers put their good words into the world.

– Suzanne Sherman

Suzanne Sherman has been a publishing professional in various capacities since 1983 and has specialized in memoir for over 20 years. Her clients have published with Wiley & Sons, Chronicle Books, Ten Speed Press, Monkfish Publishing, Freethought Press, and more. With her guidance, clients who preferred a small print run of their books to distribute as they liked have used a printer, many have successfully self-published, and several have put their books into the market with the help of a hybrid publisher.

Suzanne began her thirty-plus-year publishing career as an editor at Women’s Sports & Fitness magazine. She went on to become an associate editor at Ortho Books and then a freelance editor for Ten Speed Press, Chronicle Books, and other Bay Area publishers for ten years. She is the author of two books, one published by Temple University Press, the second, Girlhood in America: Personal Stories 1910 – 2010, self-published more recently.

Suzanne believes in the power of the personal story and appreciates helping elevate the story of experience from truth to art. She knows that good memoir is more than a captivating read, it can be one of our greatest teachers. Suzanne has spoken on memoir at the California Writer’s Club (John Steinbeck Center Conference), at the Story Circle Network Conference in Austin, and for the National Memoir Writers Association.

Besides being a book editor and speaker, Suzanne is also a longtime memoir teacher. She has taught weekend memoir intensives for the University of California, Southern Oregon University, and has taught online memoir courses at several colleges. As adjunct faculty for 20 years at Santa Rosa Junior College, she taught memoir to hundreds of writers of all experience levels and critiqued thousands of short memoirs. Since 2012 Suzanne has taught weekly memoir classes at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, in Northern California.

Suzanne earned a BA in creative writing at University of California and pursued an MFA in writing at San Francisco State University before returning to her native Los Angeles in 1989 to study screenwriting at UCLA and accept a position as a script reader for HBO Pictures. When she resettled in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1991 she says she smiled for an entire year she was so glad to be back. Since 1996 Suzanne has made her home in Sonoma County, California where she works with writers from around the country and other parts of the world in all stages of preparation of their books, from concept to completion.
